Yesterday was just like any other day until Emmy said she had a headache.
When your child says they don’t feel good, it’s one of the hardest parenting times. My stomach drops and my full attention goes to thinking of ways to help them feel more comfortable and get better asap. Thankfully it doesn’t seem to be anything beyond allergies from the change in the weather… but it was nice to know that I have some ways to help her feel better when she’s not feeling her best.

That’s when I rely on my bag of tricks… tools to make my babies feel better!
Here are my favorite tips to help children feel better when they are sick.
- Cool wash cloths are the hero of the story. They always magically help. When it’s really hot out we put them in the freezer for a couple minutes so they are extra cool. And be sure to flip them over often.
- A good friend (that can easily be thrown in the washing machine if it gets dirty) to hug always helps. We give them a stuffed animal to cuddle with and hang out with whenever they aren’t feeling well.
- Lots of fluid. I know that everyone says this, but it’s one of the most important ways to feel better. Being dehydrated is dangerous and makes you feel even worse. We let them pick the fluid because we know how important it is to get them to drink it.
- 4. Have both heavy and light blankets right next to each other. So often they are either hot or cold and it is nice to have each one at arms length.
- Keep pain relievers/fever reducers and a Kinsa on hand. Keeping track of their symptoms while they are sick should be the last of our concerns… and Kinsa takes care of that part so we can take care of our kiddos.

We have and use the original Kinsa (and we love it!), and we are super excited for the new Kinsa Smart Ear Thermometer!
- Instant, 1 second temperature readings
- Comfortable to hold and use on a sleeping baby or squirmy toddler
- Easy to use 1-button switch, easy to read screen display with icons
- Can be used on its own, or with the Kinsa app. The Kinsa app works with the thermometer wirelessly via Bluetooth
- Remembers for you – the Kinsa app records fever, symptoms, medications, notes for each child on your phone so you don’t have to. Keep track for yourself, another caregiver, or doctor.
- Guidance – in-app knowledge from medical experts, including Mayo Clinic, guides parents on when to take extra precaution or head straight to a doctor
- Accounts – Any parent or caregiver can see a child’s history and symptoms on their separate phones
- Shows common illnesses circulating nearby through Kinsa’s Groups feature.

I hate when my kids are sick. I always make sure my medicine cabinet is stocked just in case.
I am the same way. I always make sure I am stocked up medicine. I wouldn’t having the Kinsa Smart Ear Thermometer.
These are great tips! It is never fun for anyone when the kids are sick
Lots of fluid is the most important. It can make the difference between a few days of the crud and an ER visit.
Yes, fluids definitely are important when anyone is sick!
My kids love chicken soup with saltine crackers and some Coke. I don’t know what it is about that combination, but it always makes them feel much better.
Drinking lots of fluids seems to help immensely. It’s hard for them to do with sore throats but it really makes a difference.
There isn’t much worse for a parent than when they have a sick child. These are great tips to get through it.
For my daughter is it basically rest, rest and more rest. She’s not big on chicken soup and her tummy gets upset with medicines. The only think I give her is cough drops and Tylenol for fever.
Excellent tips here as it can be so hard dealing with sick children, nothing worse than seeing your child hurting
Fantastic tips, I completely admit I turn into a big kid when I am ill all I want is a cuddle and silly TV.
Now that’s a cool product – something I would buy. I”m going to check out the kickstarter now!
Good idea with the cool wash cloths. Even my Hubs has me put those on his head when he isn’t feeling well.
I don’t have kids, but when I was young I used to want tomato soup with a grilled cheese sandwich. That’s good sick food.
When my kids are sick, they need two things: Disney movies and ginger ale. If they have that combo, they’re good to go.
Haha sounds like a great combo to me. There’s nothing like wrapping up in a blanket and watching a movie when you’re sick.
That is so cool!! Our smartphones really are smart! Its no wonder we can’t live without them!!! I have never seen a thermometer like this but I love it!
My son came to me at about 6 the other night and said he was ready for bed, I knew something was up. Sure enough, he had a fever. One of these thermometers would have been handy!
My Mom always gave me peppermint water for my nausea, and would comb my hair when I felt bad. They always made me feel a lot better.
These are great tips. It is never fun when the little ones are sick.
I love this device. I think it was really ingenious idea for them to develop this.
When the kids are sick, anything that makes it easier the better. We have a forehead thermometer, but I bet this one would be a good one for checking fever!
Wow, I didn’t realize you could get a thermometer that plugged into your phone! I love how far technology has advanced!
It is so heartbreaking to have a sick kid at home! I think this thermometer would be helpful. I need to get one for my medicine cabinet.
Oh my, having a sick kid is so tough and as parents, we want to fix it! Always like to monitor those fevers and push clear fluids.
Would you believe I still have and use the same thermometer I received when I was pregnant with my middle child and she is now 9! I would love to upgrade and this baby looks super smart indeed!
The most advanced thermometer I’ve ever seen! Works with an app?! How technologically advanced is that?! One press of a button and done! Is there like a history too in the app? I am so curious about this one!
I always give my son lots of love and cuddles when he’s sick, even if I risk getting yucky in the process. I hate seeing him sick.
It means sleepless nights for me whenever one of my kids is sick. Chicken soup and rice porridge really help them feel better.
Thank goodness we havent had any sickness this year. I like that thermometer..
How convenient! I’d love to have this kind of thermometer, it would make things a lot easier.
A cool product with an excellent discount. What’s not to like?
It is no fun to be sick but that thermometer sure looks like it would make things easier when trying to take a temp. Will have to get one of those.
I am actually in the market for a new thermometer so this post could not have come at a better time. Thank you!
This sounds like a wonderful product. I love that it gives a temperature very quickly. That can always come in handy. I love that it works with an app. How neat is that?!
Looks like a really fantastic tool. I have an old in the ear thermometer that I don’t think actually works anymore I think the battery is worn down and no way to replace it. I need to look into this as a real option. Checking out their Indigogo campaign now.
The Kinsa sounds AMAZING! I’m surprised by the price, too. Good quality thermometers are usually so expensive!
What an amazing thing that they are giving these to families in need! Thank you for sharing all of this supportive information as well as the tips.
When my kids are sick they like to curl up on the couch and watch TV. I feed them lots of soup and drinks. This looks like a great thermometer.
What a great way to help your kids gt better. Love that the app does all that.
Wow thermometers have gotten really high tech over the years! You;re definitely ready for cold and flu season!
This looks like a great thermometer. I would love to get the one that reads the temp in the ear. I like to spoil the kids with Popsicle’s when they are sick.
Wow, this is so cool! I never knew that you can use your smartphone! Thanks for these tips, so helpful.
My dad was so old school & had one of those mercury thermometers. I was so afraid to break it, lol! But great tips for kiddos & even for adults 😉
Those are great tips! I hate when my children are sick and try to do everything I can to make them feel better faster!
This is a cool thermometer. I like that you can track the data on your phone. I know the dr always asks me what’s the highest fever, how long, ect.
Fevers can make you feel pretty miserable especially the little ones. I hope your daughter is feeling better now. She is adorable.
My mom used to rub my tummy and it made me feel safe from getting sicker. I rubbed the kids’ tummies, too. I like the speed of the new Kinsa in getting the temperature and in remembering the important information. I’m glad your kiddo is okay except for allergies.
We have this and love it! I have already set to buy some for family for the holidays!!
I feel so helpless when my little ones are sick and I can;t do anything to make them feel better instantly! I just try to make them as comfortable as possible as they work it through their system!
I don’t have any kiddies but my friend always make sure she has tons of meds just in case. She never wants to be out of anything.
This thermometer looks so cool and easy to use. I want want of these.
That looks like a great deal. I need to get one of these for the grandkids.
Wow now this is a neat invention. I need to pick one of these up asap. I hate when my kiddos are under the weather..
