I’m so excited for my oldest to start taking college classes soon!
I loved college and had so much fun and I can’t wait for her to experience it all too. Pete and I have been planning for this for a long time… what we will say and do to help her succeed and what tips we can share that we learned that will help her too.
And then I started to realize that it was best to just start with the first week. Yes, let’s make the first week awesome and the rest will follow!
Here are our tips for the first week of college.
- Don’t over pack. I wanted to take all of my picture frames. I loved the idea of having all of my memories around me in my room and then I remembered that college is for learning and making new memories, plus dorm rooms are not that big!
- Find a grocery store, bank, restaurant, health clinic and Walmart the first day you get to college. You will need all of those places and you will not want to search. Locate them and write down the address now.
- Don’t forget to pack toiletries. Nobody forgets clothes and typical back to school supplies, but they often forget health and beauty items. You want to look and feel your best when you are meeting new people so bring your favorites like Schick® Hydro Silk® Razor for Women.
- Bring snacks from home. My stomach always gets butterflies when I’m in new situations and having some good comfort food always helps.
- Let your family help move you in. You will (kind of) be on your own soon enough so take advantage of all the help now.
- Map out where your classes are and do a practice day. Walk them all so there are no surprises with hidden rooms. If you are driving be sure to scope out where the best parking spaces are.
- Meet new people. Ask to sit with other people and offer other people a seat at your table. You are all in this together and it’s a great time to bond and meet new people. I’m still friends with college friends!
- Keep your phone charged. You never know when you will want to call home and your mom will appreciate the call.
- Do your laundry. Pick a day each week right from the beginning and stick with it.
- Have fun! Study hard and have fun too! College is just as much about growing as a person as it is growing your mind. You will learn so much about yourself with this new freedom. It is a great time in your life.
A last little piece of advise…
Get out there and make some memories!
As a mom, no matter how old our kids are, we are always thinking about them and ways to make make sure they know how much we love them. I like to leave little surprises for them. For Maddie I bought her a Schick® Hydro Silk® Razor Women at Walmart. I want her to be comfortable in her own skin and not have to worry about the little things in life.
Be sure to enter the Schick Selfie Sweeps for the chance to win some cool prizes and visit Walmart.com to see all the awesome Schick Disposable products that are perfect to take to college.
I can’t wait to hear all the adventures she has as she starts her journey into college soon!
What advise would you give a new college student on the first week of school?
