I love living and raising kids in the digital age… and I still love old fashioned letter writing. Now that Emmy is reading and writing I’m excited to share my love of written words with her too! Helping me to teach her the joy of letter writing is Disney Junior’s Sofia the First and I’m so excited to share this with you via this sponsored post partnership.
When I look back on when I was five compared to Emmy’s life at five it’s exciting to see all the opportunities and possibilities she has that were not around when I was that age. Do you remember when you had a question about something and you had to look it up in a book to find the answer? These days we can just do a simple internet search and learn everything we need to know! And although I love how simple and easy technology makes life, I still love some of the old fashioned ways we learned and communicated… like letter writing!
Luckily we have the options of merging old fashion with new technology to have the best of both worlds. Emmy and I were so excited to write Sofia The First a letter using both our computer and paper and pen.
It’s really cool. You log onto Dear Sofia and the kids can pick a stationery design and then add color and stickers to it. Emmy added lots of little furry animal friends to hers. Then we printed it out…
Emmy spent some time thinking of what to say to Sofia. She decided to ask her what her favorite pet is and then she drew Sofia a little picture.
Emmy’s favorite part was folding up the letter and putting a stamp on it and sending it off! Knowing that she will get a reply back from Sofia is the cherry on top! She is so excited!
While she was writing the letter we had a nice talk about how fun letter writing is, and how letter writing helped me keep in touch with my friends when I was a little girl. She thought that was great and now she is excited to write more letters!
Your kids can write a letter to Sofia too (and get a royal letter back). Head on over to Dear Sofia to learn more.
My kids write out thank you cards, but that is it. We type out anything else in an email.
Writing a good letter is a skill that I hope will never go out of style.
I need to have my children write letters. It would be great hand writing practice and teach them social skills.
This is such a great idea! I wrote letters to my best friend as a kid (who moved to a different country) and still have those letters 🙂
I used to adore writing (when my hands would let me), there is nothing quite like receiving a letter in the mail. x
That is cute. Kids don’t even know what hand written letters even are, LOL. We make our kids write thank you note so they kind of know.
I love this. I think it’s so important to encourage writing. It really is a dying thing.
The digital age is a blessing and a curse. We can do so much more than we ever could. Unfortunately, we’re also losing the ability to do so many other things.
That is so cool!! I never knew that you could mail a letter to a princess and have them write back! DD4 would love to get a letter from ELSA!!! Teaching kids the art of letter writing is very important in my opinion too. While digital is faster, there is nothing like receiving a hand written letter.
I tried to emphasize letter writing when we were homeschooling! It’s such a nice surprise to get a letter in the mail these days.
It’s kind of crazy to think how far the world has come! This is an awesome Idea to get kids excited about the good ol’ pen and paper like the “old” days!
That is so cool. Kids are so smart these days. I love this!
This is such a good idea. Last summer my girls had pen pals, I want to get them back into doing that with my boys too. Such a good and important thing to get them doing I think. Too much dependency is on technology anymore, I used to love writing.
Very cute! I try to get my son to write thanks you letters because I think it is much more personal that way! Looks like she had a fun time!
My son is good about writing letters to grandma and grandpa. He would rather send an email, but he know they prefer a letter.
What an awesome activity. I think it’s great to teach them letter writing this way. It’s cute that they get letters back!
Writing a letter is skill that seems to be lost considering that we all text and no one composes a letter. Great article
I love this! I have my daughters write letters to their grandfather, my dad. He is currently in prison (insert sad face) and they haven’t seen him in three years. The only way they can communicate with him is through letters. They really do enjoy doing it.
What a nice idea. I need to do this with my kids, it is great for so many reasons.
My kids love getting letters in the mail I’m sure as it is becoming a lost art. They always handwrite thank you notes which may also fade from our culture soon too.
This is something all kids should learn! Letter writing is still so important.
This is a really cute idea. Thankfully my kids love to write to their grandparents and great grandmother so they haven’t lost the art of letter writing!
So cute! I love getting hand written letters! Emails just bore me now. There is something about a hand written letter that makes you feel special because someone took the time to write it.
Very important! My daughter was writing her graduation thank you notes and asked if she wrote out the envelope correctly! Seriously! Thank goodness one of her friends insists on friends writing her letters while she’s away at college.
This is so great! Letter writing has become a lost art form. It’s so much “easier” to just type up a message these days. I know for me it’s so much more personal to receive an actual letter.
I recently asked a member of my team to address an envelope (handwrite) and he did not know where to start so this post warms my heart to see that there are parents who still believe in things like this. Thank you for letting me know that I am not alone.
There are things that we wish we had before that would’ve made our lives easier and there are things that I would still like to preserve, just like you wanting to share your love for writing with your daughter. They are lucky that life is a tad easier these days though, thanks to technology.
Writing handwritten letters is a very important skill we should teach our kids. There is something about handwritten letters that make it so special.
I love writing letters in the golden old days! Lol It’s amazing how things have changed with today’s technology.
I hope the art of letter writing won’t die. I love giving and receiving hand written letters.
My daughter LOVES to write letters! It’s so rare nowadays right? We got her a pen pal so she has someone to write to 🙂
This is such a cute idea! We don’t write letters often, but we should!
I love that you are teaching your kids how great it is to write letters. This is one tradition that shouldn’t be lost in the digital age.
There is something about a handwritten letter that can never be replaced, however learning to write a proper letter is extremely important since many emails are composed in a similar fashion.
Sending snailmail is awesome. I still wish people do that often but with electronics, seldom do it anymore.
Sending (and getting) letters is fun. I’m glad your daughter is enjoying her venture as a pen pal. There are a lot of letter writers in the family and everyone enjoys the fun it brings.
My kids love writing letters. I wish more people would write still.
I have to admit I am terrible at writing letters myself. We do have the kids write thank you cards at the very least! I need to encourage them to do this more, especially with family members who live far away.
I am going to do this with my girls. I think it is important for kids to practice writing letters.
My kids used to write letters to Santa when they were younger. They were always so happy to get a letter back.
This is so cute and educational. It’s becoming a lost skill to write a letter!
I love the art of letter writing and I’m afraid it may be lost in this new digital age! I love opening my mailbox and finding letters instead of bills. HA!
This is such a neat way to get my daughter to write letters! She’s obsessed with Sofia the First!
It’s so much fun when I get mail! The kids love it even more than I do. I’ll have to share this with them!
I think it’s really cool that you are teaching your kids something that has nothing to do with technology. I think the world depends on technology way to much. Knowing the basic survival skills will come in handy.
Someone said they took cursive out of the school curriculum. I’m teaching my son cursive and when he’s got it down pat we’ll write a letter to grandma and mail it. 🙂
That is the sweetest coolest thing EVER!!
I think every child should have a pen pal! Writing letters is good for so many things!
What a little cutie. I had a penpal when I was a child and loved writing back and forth. I am glad to see letter writing making a comeback.
My daughter used to love writing letter when she was little. She still does too, thankfully.
