garmin vivoactive review

Pete and Ashley have never been so fit and I’m so proud of them.

Seeing what dedication to exercise and really just moving more can do for you as shown by these two has really encouraged me to make it a priority in my life too. I often come up with excuses as to why I don’t work out more. I don’t have time. I’m too busy… and other reasons I create in my mind are what is keeping me from being a better and healthier me. That’s about to change.

I was so excited to receive a Garmin vívoactive from our friends at Garmin who are sponsoring this post.

Originally I was going to wear it wear it and try it out… but before I would even claim it, Pete was wearing it and refusing to take it off. Whenever I’m working on a tech post like this one, Pete and I always work on them together. I’ve found that he sees things I don’t and that we are able to make a much better assessment of new products together. So it was no surprise that he had already opened it up and was learning all about it.

So that’s how it went for a few days. We rotated back and forth who got to wear it.

I love that no matter what your fitness level, Garmin has a product that can help you take charge of your daily health and activity. Garmin’s vivo family of products is perfect to get going. The Garmin vívoactive is a GPS smartwatch for the active lifestyle.

Here are Pete’s thoughts on why he loves the Garmin vívoactive.

Stylish – I’ve been asked at least five times what I had on my wrist and then I was told how cool it looks.  Also, you can download different watch faces to keep things fresh!

Notifications – It will give you a short vibration to notify you of incoming texts, emails, and phone calls. It is perfect for when you don’t want to pull your phone out of your pocket….you can determine if it is an important message or not with a glance at the watch. The app lets you control what things will notify you in this manner too.

Fitness – the GPS features of this watch are very impressive.  You can accurately track a run/walk/swim without even bringing your phone with you.  When you return to your phone, the watch will sync the data with your phone and app for you to evaluate.

App – Garmin Connect Mobile is very user friendly and I have not run into any bugs while using it with my Android smart phone.  The app charts your daily steps, your workouts that you designate, and various health markers.  It easily connects to MyFitnessPal which is a very popular app I use to track my diet.

Waterproof – No need to take it off for swimming or showering which helps it not forgetting to put it back on.  This is a rare feature for smart watches

Battery – Seems to last forever.  I’ve only had to charge it about once a week.

I agree with Pete on all of these. One of the features that I loved the most was the reminder to get up and move around. I spend hours at the computer and the time flies by without me noticing. I love that it vibrates to remind me to get up and stretch and take a quick walk when I’ve been sitting for too long.

When we were on our last plane trip a week ago, we even had a conversation with another passenger about how much he loves his Garmin vívoactive too! In fact he said that he bought another one at Walmart while we was visiting Pennsylvania for a family member!

  • I’d use the Garmin Vivoactive to remind me when it’s time to get up and take a walk. It’s easy to remember to stretch and bend. When I’m working at the computer, I often get sidetracked and don’t get the walking done that I want to. I’ve found it’s easier to break activities into portions throughout the day.

    • I would give it to my husband for Christmas. He recently had a heart attack and is trying to get on the road to a healthier version of himself!

  • This sounds like a useful tool even beyond fitness. It’s really cool that you can get call, email and text notifications through it.

  • My advice to others is to just get out there but go at your own pace, don’t try to compete with what you see around you or else you’ll get intimidated and stop all together! This watch looks sweet and I would love to have one. Does it work on all smart phones?

  • Only charging once a week sounds awesome! I have to charge my FitBit 2 to 3 times a week and I feel like I don’t get all my steps counted because of this. I may need to switch to Garmin!

  • That looks so cool! I would love to keep one for myself, lol. It’s really nice to give a gift though.

  • I just purchased a bike/eliptical combo that i’m using to stay fit. i also like to walk down to the bank or post office instead of driving the three or four miles to get some good walking in. i’m also blessed to get to go burn calories walking around Disneyland which is by far my most favorite place to walk. typically i’ve done 5-10 miles by the time i leave

  • This is exactly what i am looking for to help me track my fitness and so much more. I spent a ton of time in the pool this summer and i can really see a difference in my body.

  • I am definitely needing to pay more attention to the time that I am exercising. I am going to start wearing a fitness tracker soon!

  • That looks like a great device! I am so much closer to my fitness goals when I’m accountable and keep track. Is it wrong to buy myself a gift this close to Christmas?

  • I have an office job where I sit at a desk for 8 hours. Every time I need to go to the bathroom, fax machine, copier or someone else’s office I’ll go the long way and do an extra lap around the corridor.

  • It’s very stylish, but my hubby never wears a watch and I rarely do. It’s odd, because I used to all the time, but now that I have a cell phone, I just look at that for the time when I’m out and about.

  • My advice for staying active is to just add small things to the day–park under a tree in the back of a parking lot and walk rather than compete for the closer space; go ahead and take stairs if it is only one floor; place the laptop on the counter during the day so that you stand rather than sit.

  • My advice for staying active is to walk at lunch, and just keep doing little bits no matter how little it seems. Once I stop, it’s so much harder to start up again!

  • I have a 5 year old and a new puppy, so staying active isn’t the issue, keeping up with my notifications that’s the hard part.

  • I want one of these for myself. I am trying to be good this holiday season and one of the things I am doing is exercising at least 2 times a week but I try for more.

  • My advice is to get that work out done first thing in the morning, even if you have to get up earlier to do so. It will give you a burst of energy and no more making excuses why you “can’t.”

  • The advice I would give is that everything counts toward your workout. Park further out when parking your car. Take the stairs when the opportunity presents itself. Create fun little goals that encourage more steps and movement.

  • Just getting yourself moving around is the key. It’s so important for everyone to stay active and taking even 15-20 mins of their day to exercise. Whether it’s just walking the dog or riding your bike to work. I stay active by going to the gym 5 times/week….running outdoors on trails (garmin vivoactive) would come in handy then). The key for me is changing up workouts…not having repeat workouts on the same week. But it could be playing tennis, swimming, running bleacher miles laps around my high school track. The main issue is keeping my mind open and active to various workouts, ones that can get you excited to get out there and explore.

  • I try and stay very active but it would be wonderful to have a device like this that will provide me actual stats on just how active I am. I also love that it reminds you to get up and move! In the summer I swim, bike ride, jog, do my morning Yoga routine and walk our 2 dogs. In the winter I ski and snowboard, jog, do my yoga and walk our dogs. I have no clue how to gauge my fitness routine so this device will really help me out. Thanks for the great review on it and the chance to enter.

  • I stay active by running on the trails by my backyard mountains. Also hitting up the gym to get a weights workout in so my body stays toned. But I focus on a specific muscle group a day for maximum gain. One day it could be biceps, another day back, another one legs and so on. I recommend for people to stay active, half the battle is getting yourself to the gyms. Once you’re there…once you start moving those body parts….that’s what counts. Also if you get a buddy to workout with, more power to you since you can use each other to stay motivated. It takes a commitment to reach the ultimate goal, but the main issue is implementing baby steps and setting up small goals. Success doesn’t come overnight but it’s a long term process..but all worth it at the end. No better feeling than fitness satisfaction!

  • I run & walk with my dog outdoors whenever the weather permits and I also workout daily in my home on cardio machines and do weight training ,too.

  • I stay active by trying to chase my crazy threenager daughter around. Some days I win. Some days I don’t. Maybe this device can help me win more. 🙂

  • I stay in shape by finding activities that use a lot of energy that I can also do with my daughter! Long walks, hikes and dancing. Then I go for a run when she’s in preschool. My advice to others is to start now! There is never a great time to start, so just do it!

  • My advise for staying active is to keep moving. Don’ remain stationary all day long – which is hard to do for a lot people as we all have jobs in front of a laptop. Try to get a desktop that moves higher so you can stand instead of sit!

  • If you have an office job stand (if possible) when on the phone, park in the furthest spot every where you go. Also find a good quality supplement with B12 to keep your energy up!

  • I always advice and took the advice to stay hydrated. It is so much easier to stay active if not dehydrated. Ibwould love tobuse one of these myself and its awesome thatbit is waterproof too.

  • One thing I do to stay active as a mom with 3 little ones is to remember to do things quickly. Things like sweeping and mopping can get your heart rate up if you try to speed sweep! lol. It’s a little thing, but it does seem to help!

  • My advice would be to keep at it everyday! Go for walks after dinner or a bike ride with the family and get everyone involved.
