A couple nights ago… we surprised my older two daughters with a night out!

Since “The Toddler” has joined our family, nights out have been few and far between. We all feel guilty leaving her at home {with a babysitter of course} so we plan activities that are before her bedtime. But I couldn’t pass up a chance to be at opening night of TOTEM by Cirque du Soleil! {PS. review below, but this was my favorite act… I was mesmerized!}

About the show: “Cirque du Soleil returns to San Diego this time with TOTEM, its latest big top production. Written and directed by Robert Lepage, TOTEM premieres April 25, 2012 for a limited engagement under the blue and yellow Grand Chapiteau (Big Top) located at Del Mar Fairgrounds. Since its world premiere in 2010, TOTEM already visited more than 10 cities and charmed more than one million people in North America and Europe. San Diego will be its only South California stop in 2012.

The word “totem” contains the idea of the order of species. We carry in our bodies the potential of all species, all the way to our desire to fly—like the thunderbird at the top of the totem pole. TOTEM traces the fascinating journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly. The characters evolve on a stage evoking a giant turtle, the symbol of origin for many ancient civilizations.

Inspired by many founding myths, TOTEM illustrates, through a visual and acrobatic language, the evolutionary progress of species. Somewhere between science and legend, TOTEM explores the ties that bind Man to other species, his dreams and his infinite potential.  The cast of TOTEM comprises 52 performing artists from 19 countries.”

My Review: It was amazing. Larger than life Wow style! You can’t really describe how fun it is to watch people perform amazing acts that defy gravity. Let me quote the lady sitting next to me… “Holy Crow” & “No Way” & “Oh My GOSH”.  I couldn’t have said it better. The set is just as awesome. You forget you are in a tent {a very nice one I might add}. I was really excited to see that there were some very young children there {around the age of 2} so that I could let you all know what ages this show is best for.

For the little ones it’s important to remember a couple things:

1. The show is loud. Not loud like hurt my ears loud, but enough that if you have a little talker it would be totally okay to bring them… chit chat will not be heard past your seat.

2. It’s dark. But it’s a good dark because the spot lights can then be used effectively and boy are they used well!

3. The show is fast moving to hold little attention spans.

4. There are {male} butt cheeks visible {and the lady next to me let me know they that she thought they were really cute ones} but that was the extent of any visible skin that I saw that would normally be covered by a bathing suit.

5. The show was perfect for children of all ages. My girls both loved it!

After the show I polled the whole family… husband, me, both older daughters all gave it rave reviews. If you are looking for a great way to celebrate Mother’s Day I have an awesome deal for you!
