In celebration of one of our favorite movies Pinocchio, I am happy to be sharing this story in partnership with Disney.

Years ago, I remember swinging on our brand new swing-set with my little sister on a crisp So Cal winter day. I remember having a knitted sweater on and I remember my sister kicking ever so high into the air next to me. “Higher sister… go higher sister,” she squealed with delight as we both caught air from our swings. As the momentum started to wane, we both broke out into song, something we still do today.

“When You Wish Upon a Star” from Pinocchio was the soundtrack of our childhood. It was everything our parents hoped for us and it has been the mantra of both of our lives. Neither of us understood then, or understand now, the notion that there are limits in this life because we were raised knowing that if we can wish for it, and put in the work to make it happen, anything our heart desires will come to us.

Now that we both have families of our own, we both share this with our children.

I remember the first time I heard the same lyrics slip from my lips as a new mom. Maddie was just weeks old, and as I’ve shared before, I didn’t bond with her immediately after birth. It took me a couple of days. Her pregnancy was high risk and I think I was just scared of losing her. A nurse in the hospital told me that the best way to overcome this was to start telling her stories from my life. The idea was to share what my childhood was like and what I hope hers will be like, too. I started to talk and share with her.  Before I knew it, I was singing her “When You Wish Upon a Star” and the rest is history. Now each of my girls has grown up hearing it and the message within it that is so important to me.

I want my girls to know that making wishes is very important. It is the gateway to living a great life. It is a map of sorts that will lead them to greatness and happiness. I also want them to know that wishes change often and to never stop making them.  Along with their wishes, they also have to remember to never give up on them and to work hard to make them come true.

As the youngest, Emmy is just starting to understand this. For her especially, I like to also watch movies together that help her understand this better. I am so excited that Pinocchio will soon be available on Blu-ray, Disney Movies Anywhere and for the first time on Digital HD so that we can watch it over and over again at home!

If you have never seen it before or need a refresher, it is a timeless tale for the whole family and is the movie that inspired the world to wish upon a star. With his faithful friend Jiminy Cricket by his side, Pinocchio embarks on fantastic adventures that test his bravery, loyalty, and honesty until he triumphs in his quest for his heart’s desire: to become a real boy. I have tears just thinking about it! This really was such a special story from my childhood!

  • Pinocchio is one of my favorite Disney movies. I love how he’s always trying to be a real boy and fight off his urges to do the easy thing instead of the right thing.

  • Pinocchio is just about the best Disney movie ever made, in my opinion. I love that he never gives up on his dreams, and he always strives to be the best he can be.

  • My daughter and I love to watch Pinocchio together. We have been watching Disney movies ever since she was born. She is now in her twenties and still has all her Disney VHS movies from when she was little and watches them.

  • I love the whimsical soundtrack of Pinocchio too. I am not even sure my three have ever saw it but what better time than now?

  • I love all the classic Disney movies! I haven’t seen Pinochio such in a long time, I should watch it again! And this time I’ll pay more attention to he music too!

  • I have always loved the movie Pinocchio and I can’t wait to share it all over again with my kids! So many morals and lessons to be learned from that film!

  • This is truly a classic. I love the new Disney movies coming out and all but I believe the older Disney movies hold a magic and connection that the newer ones don’t.

  • I love Pinocchio! I just got the movie in the mail today, so I’ll be watching this over the weekend with my girls. I can’t wait to watch it with them. I love all these Disney movies.

  • Such a fantastic post. It made me think about my childhood with my systems, growing up in the 80s and 90s, and being a parent now. The relationship that I have with my daughter and the relationship that I hope she is able to have with a sibling someday. All leading back to wishes and dreams … fantastic. Thank you for the walk down memory lane and bringing an old friend into the mix!

  • I don’t think I’ve shown Pinocchio to my kids yet! I know what we’re doing this weekend!

  • Pinocchio is a classic Disney movie. I watched it quite frequently growing up.. on good old VHS tapes! It has a good story and teaches good lessons!

  • My granddaughters are looking forward to seeing this. I have to admit that Pinocchio is not one of my favorite Disney Characters, but I would also love to see this movie.

  • Pinnochio is one of our favorite movies!! It is one that we could watch again and again. For me, my favorite Disney movies was The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast when I was little.

  • When my daughter was little my husband insisted she collect all of the Disney Movies. We still have them in a dvd case somewhere in our basement, I remember liking this one a lot!

  • What a sweet photos! Pinnochio is my favorite character and it reminds me my childhood.

  • I love Pinnochio and the lessons that he teaches about lying. There were so many great movies produced from Disney when I was growing up. I think the Little Mermaid was the most popular for me.

  • What a beautiful story and such a lovely thing to pass down to your children – and hopefully they will pass on to their children. Pinocchio for me was all about not telling lies because people always find out.

  • I remember watching Pinocchio and thinking my gosh he had such a sad life. But I do like that song, “When you wish upon a star”. It’s a special kind of song.
