After three kids I know a thing or two about bedtime routines and I finally have one that we all love.

Since the minute Maddie came home from the hospital we have been reading to her every night.

When Ashley was born, she joined the night time fun too… and then when Emmy joined us Ashley started doing the reading. It’s been really cool seeing the transition from being the one listening to being the one reading for Ashley. One thing that hasn’t changed is that no matter where we are, at home or traveling, bedtime means it’s story time.

Bedtime also means it’s time to brush our teeth and wind down for the evening.

Emmy’s bedtime routine is our absolute favorite and we’ve noticed that no matter if we are at home or in a hotel, keeping with this routine really helps her sleep better. We stick with this even if it means going to bed later in the evening than normal. It takes about 15-20 minutes and if we have more time than that, we just read more.

This is what her routine looks like.

  1. Change into pajamas while you think about your 5 favorite parts of your day. When she was little, and needed help changing, we would talk about them out loud. Now she shares the highlights with me.
  2. Brush teeth. We use Orajel™ PAW Patrol™ products because she LOVES PAW Patrol™ and it’s a fun way to encourage her to brush longer. They are also a great way to transition little ones to fluoride toothpaste which helps protect against cavities and keep young teeth and gums healthy.
  3. Reading time. We keep a big stack of Emmy’s favorite books right by her bed, our bed, and in the family room. I add a new book often and rotate her old favorites as a surprise.

Scholastic has a great Read2Me Tonight Site full of resources available to help and encourage us all to make reading/brushing a part of our child’s night time routine. I also found a list of the 100 Best Read Aloud Books too that make choosing good night books easy. Scholastic even has this great E-Book right now called The Three Bees that we have been reading to Emmy. It’s adorable, fun to read and FREE!
