“How much money can you make blogging”

This is the second most common question we are asked after “How do I start a blog” or “How much money can a blog really make”? The answer is surprisingly easy to answer.

You can make as much money as you can dream of blogging. 

I know that sounds flippant to say. I mean, I dream of making 100 million dollars from blogging and I haven’t reached that level yet, but I know that the only thing holding me back from that making that amount of money online is me.

I know that if I had a plan to accomplish that, I could. But for most of us, especially when we first started blogging, we would be thrilled with much less. I know I was!

So how much money can you make blogging if you are not shooting for millions? Let’s talk about it.

When I first started I had the goal of earning $4,500 a month. That seemed like a lot of money to make working from home, but I just knew I could do it. I fluttered a bit and quickly realized that the key to success was a plan.

It wasn’t long before I blew past making $4500 a month with my blog.

And from there, I just kept increasing my blog income. I realized that I could make money with my blog in so many different ways. There was affiliate marketing, having display ads and my favorite for a long time, sponsored posts. Of course, there are a lot of other ways to make money with a blog, but those were the easiest to start with.

After a while, I earned money from my blog just with sponsored posts and I was thrilled with how well I was doing. I averaged making over $30,000 a month just from my blog and that was before we started helping others start their own online blogging businesses.

Although we share our blogging income reports, most bloggers don’t share their income.

I don’t blame them. It feels very strange to be sharing ours, but we feel it is important to let other bloggers how much money we make from our blog. We know that some people (like Pete) need to see numbers as inspiration that they too can be successful with a money making blogging.

In the past we have had display ads on our blog, those are those ads on blog sidebars you often see, and we made a good amount of money. I consider those to be the most passive form of making money from a blog… but you still have to have awesome content! 

Having a lot of blogging friends, when we get together we talk about money.

The funny thing is that it never feels like a competition when we are talking. It is more like a sisterhood of us altogether and we share what is working for each of us, and how much money we are making from our blogs. It always thrills me when my blogging friends are making over a million dollars just from having display ads on their blogs. I know that they don’t make that kind of money from just being lucky. They really work smart to make it happen with a plan and by treating their blog like the business it is.

I personally know bloggers making way into the millions, and I know from others that there are bloggers making multiple times that amount. So we know that you can for sure make $30,000/mo. (like I did for years) to millions per year like my blogging friends are. 

I also know that there are many bloggers happily making six figures.

I think that is the goal amount for most bloggers. Now I know that we have all heard of bloggers and social media influencers who make a huge amount of money almost instantly and I am sure that it has and does happen, but it is not the norm.

Often times they have been quietly working away on their blogs and it seems like they were overnight successes. Or maybe they are one of the lucky ones who are just in the right place at the right time, but I wouldn’t want to be one of those. Creating a long term plan for making money from your blog is the key to success. You need to define how you will be making money and also work the plan you have in place. I’ve never been interested in being a one-hit blogging wonder. I am in it for the long term, and I hope you are too!

The bottom line is that the sky really is the limit as far as making money from your blog.

You need to have defined ways you will be making money blogging and a plan that you are dedicated to following. 

One last thought, we never quote exact timelines for making money or complete money-making potentials from blogs or blogging because there are so many variables. I never want someone to think this is a get rich quick scheme. It takes time and dedication to make money blogging, but I have never, in almost two decades of blogging been this excited about the potential income opportunities in blogging.

We have never before had as many ways to monetize and the tools to make it happen!
