Do You Share Housekeeping Chores With Your Spouse?

Pete and I have a long-standing joke about housekeeping. It gets brought up at least once a month, sometimes more. It all started back when we were first married. We had just moved in together, and we realized we needed to establish some sort of jobs for each of us for running our household. I immediately offered to be in charge of paying bills. I already had a system for paying my own, so I figured I could easily transition to to joining all of our expenses and handle the financial side of things. Pete was fine with that since his job at the time often had him working late into the night and on weekends so he didn’t have as much time to do it.

He offered to take care of the needs of the pets….a dog and two cats. I was thrilled about that! Then he asked how we should divide the housekeeping jobs. Who would do dishes, who would clean the kitchen, fun stuff like that.

I turned and looked at him with what he said was a shocked and wild expression as I explained that I was unable to be a part of the housekeeping because I was allergic to cleaning supplies.

Pete immediately started laughing, only I wasn’t kidding. I was totally serious.

In my defense, I was sensitive to cleaning products. My hands would become red, itchy, and blister when I came into contact with a whole list of chemicals, but I certainly wasn’t unable to help with the housekeeping. We ended up finding some products that didn’t irritate my skin and I became the laundry and bathroom cleaning expert in our home. Pete did dishes and cleaned the floors, and we shared the rest of the cleaning projects together.

When I tell people that we share the housekeeping chores, and have since the beginning, I’m always surprised that more people don’t.  We’ve always divided them based on what we liked doing and what we were good at. Laundry is just my thing. I don’t mind doing it at all, and Pete really doesn’t like doing it so that worked out well. On the other hand, Pete likes mopping and is really good at it, mainly for the exercise. He is always looking for ways to stay active, so this is just another way to move to him, where I just don’t think I’m as good as he is at it. After all of these years of being in charge of keeping our floors clean, I joke that he is also a mop pro, so when we had the opportunity to try out the new Microfiber EasyWring Spin Mop & Bucket System from our sponsors O-Cedar, we immediately said yes. I’m so glad we did, because it is really awesome!

Cedar Mop

The O-Cedar Microfiber EasyWring Spin Mop & Bucket System is an effective and efficient cleaning experience with minimal labor and little mess. It’s ideal for all hard floors with no bending down and no wet hands. Its triangular mop head allows for cleaning in hard-to-reach areas. The Easy Wring Spin Bucket and Mop gives you the ability to control the amount of water applied to the floor for easier wringing and quicker-drying floors.

tips to make housekeeping easier

Pete put it to the test and he gave it a big thumbs up!  His favorite part is that the exclusive bucket design has built-in wringer that allows for hands-free wringing and it really works. He sometimes is sore from workouts or his old back injury pops up and this is really good to have so he doesn’t have to bend over to wring out the mop. Plus it gets the water wringed out better than any other wringer we have had. Since we have both tile and wood floors, we use more water on the tile and have to keep the water off the hardwood so this lets you get just the right amount of water on and off the mop.  When you press down on the lever with your foot, the mop spins around very fast inside the basin to get the water out.  The more times you press down on the lever, the less moisture the mop has on it.

He also was impressed by the shape of the mop. It has a triangle shaped head to it that helps keeping corners really clean!

It comes with a deep-cleaning microfiber that removes and absorbs tough dirt and grime too!

  • My favorite cleaning tip would be if your microwave gets to dirty put a cup of water in the microwave and microwave for like 5 minutes and the mess will just wipe out!!!

  • The O-Cedar Microfiber EasyWring Spin Mop & Bucket System looks like a great product. I split the chores with my son and husband.

  • My biggest tip is to alternate cleaning duties. When I cook, my husband cleans up. When he grills, I clean up. We usually end up helping each other.

  • I like the set-up for this one quite a bit! I’m single (but dating), so I don’t expect him to help me out at my house. However, if we cook together, he does help clean up!

  • This looks like a great mop! I love a mop that gets most of the water out. I HATE mopping and leaving behind a lake.

  • I think my husband actually does more than I do when it comes to housework, but we both definitively pitch in.

  • We share chores! I however do the most because I’m home more, so I don’t mind! I actually love cleaning. Not so much at the moment as I’m in nesting mode and its like off the charts but yeah! Other times I do.

  • Getting into the corners were the regular mop misses is perfect for pet owners! I would probably like to mop more if I had something so easy to use.

  • I think that is so sweet that you both share chores and don’t see it as weird. I think being able to help one another shows how much you appreciate each other. Great teamwork!

  • My husband does the majority of the house work at our house. He works on the weekends, so he has four days off during the week, which he uses to catch up on the household chores.

  • Sadly, my hubby doesn’t do much in the way of helping with indoor household chores. However, he’s a rock star when it comes to taking care of the cars and outdoor chores.

  • We have a chore list that has something that everyone is responsible for, so it is not all on one person to clean the whole house.

  • My husband and I both work full time so we share some of the household duties from time to time. We don’t really discuss it though. If we see something needs to be done and we’re available to do it, we just get it done.

  • We split up the chores based on what we are good at also. However, there are some jobs neither of us love doing. Wish the cleaning fairies would tackle toilets.

  • It is important to share chores. It is really exhausting if you are the only responsible fro daily chores.

  • Does he have a twin brother? LOL My SO has to be told (multiple times) to help around the house. We have a house with three stories, and it can get overwhelming. I’m at home now, so I don’t mind doing the housework, and he does all the yard work. If and when I do go back to work outside of the house, we are for sure going to share the housekeeping chores.

  • I wish housechores would have been shared. Not even when I was down and out with flu for days would anything get done. My husband was just too old school. You are very lucky. 🙂

  • My husband does a great job in supporting with house chores anytime, as he understands that managing 2 kids is more harder! The EasyWring mop sounds like a great one & I am sure it could come very much handy for our home!

  • Oh yes we do share chores. My husband does the majority though, we just do the things that each other doesn’t like.

  • My kids and I share the chores. We split the weeks worth up on Sunday nights. I think everyone should be helping out. This looks like a great mop and I need a new one,.

  • I do most of the cleaning in my home. That’s because my husband works nights and I stay home. However, he does all of the home improvements and outdoor jobs!
