ten minutes to a better day

From the minute I wake up it’s GO! GO! GO!

Three kids, a full time job and the desire to look like I didn’t stay up till two am working has taught me a few things about how important the first minutes of the morning are. I started something new this year. I’ve been getting up 10 minutes before the kids to plan the day and breathe. Yes breathe. How often do you feel like you don’t have a moment to catch your breath once the day starts? I know I did. I take this time to look around at all the beauty in the world and to take a few deep breaths.

The reality is that until lunch time I won’t get a break so I know I need some fuel for my body to keep hunger away and me going strong!

As part of my new “10 minute morning ritual” I’ve added the new belVita Bites Breakfast Biscuits. They are a nutritious, convenient breakfast choice that contains slow-release carbs from wholesome grains to help fuel my body for 4 hours. Each packet of belVita Bites contains 20g of whole grain, 4g of fiber*, no high fructose corn syrup, no partially hydrogenated oil and no artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners. *Contains 7-8g fat per serving, depending on flavor variety.

This is exactly what my 10 minutes in the morning looks like.

I wake up and head to the kitchen and I grab a bag of belVita and some fruit. Some days I choose the Mixed Berry and some days the Chocolate. Just depends on my mood. I’ve been sitting at the kitchen counter because it’s a bit cool out in the mornings, but come summer I’m totally moving outside to the patio to enjoy the view too. Once I have my fruit and belVita I sit down and take a few deep breaths and then start working on my to-do list. I write out everything I have to get done and everything I would like to get done and I separate the two lists. There is something about writing it down on paper that motivates me to actually get it done and then there is a huge amount of satisfaction checking it off the list as I do it. I spend exactly 10 minutes eating, relaxing and planning and then it’s time for the fun to start aka. the kids all wake up!

My days have been so much better (and productive) since I started doing this. It seems trivial that 10 minutes can have such an effect on a full day but it’s true!

When you think about it, it makes total sense. Just sitting down and mapping out how you want your day to go provides such clarity. Add to that starting the day with food that will give you energy for 4 hours and you have the making of a totally awesome day! I will admit that there have been a couple days where I had very early morning engagements so I’ve enjoyed belVita Bites on-the-go! It’s a great addition to part of a balanced breakfast with a serving of fruit and a serving of fat-free or low fat dairy – like berries and nonfat yogurt! Yum!
