Disney says it best when explaining what Inside Out is all about…

Do you ever look at someone and wonder what is going on inside their head? Disney•Pixar’s original new film “Inside Out” ventures inside the mind to find out. Based in Headquarters, the control center inside 11-year-old Riley’s mind, five Emotions are hard at work, led by lighthearted optimist Joy (voice of Amy Poehler), whose mission is to make sure Riley stays happy. Fear (voice of Bill Hader) heads up safety, Anger (voice of Lewis Black) ensures all is fair and Disgust (voice of Mindy Kaling) prevents Riley from getting poisoned—both physically and socially. Sadness (voice of Phyllis Smith) isn’t exactly sure what her role is, and frankly, neither is anyone else. When Riley’s family relocates to a scary new city, the Emotions are on the job, eager to help guide her through the difficult transition. But when Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley’s mind— taking some of her core memories with them—Fear, Anger and Disgust are left reluctantly in charge. Joy and Sadness must venture through unfamiliar places—Long Term Memory, Imagination Land, Abstract Thought and Dream Productions—in a desperate effort to get back to Headquarters, and Riley.

Now let me share what we really felt about Inside Out…

Short version:

  • Go see Inside Out
  • Take your mom, sister, daughter, friend
  • Take your husband and dad… but maybe not your teen or pre-teen son. Boys under 8 would still enjoy it, but the pre-teen and teens might get bored as it’s not as relatable for them.
  • There are parts that are slower than others, if you have attention issues like me know that they are few and far between and that it picks up again pretty quickly.
  • Be ready for your kids to express how they are feeling with words like “Joy is in my headquarters and is leading me right now”. <— this really happened to me. My little one talks like this now.
  • You will feel the draw to respond to comments on Facebook using Inside Out stickers and that is totally okay.
  • You will learn that there is a time and place for every emotion… and that it’s okay to feel them all.

Long Version:

Inside Out was a movie we’ve been waiting months to see. The girls and I felt the same enthusiasm for it as we did for FROZEN, although this is a completely different movie and really can’t be compared to FROZEN in any other way except to say that it is very inspirational and touches aspects of life that often not mentioned.

When we were at Disney Social Media Moms we previewed the first (almost) 3/4 of Inside Out and we liked it so much that we bought our own tickets to the first showing of it in the area.

For adults the humor is spot on.

Like, I laughed out loud multiple times and if you only want to see a movie to be entertained this movie does just that… but if you are like me and want more depth and even personal growth you will not be disappointed- not at all.

This movie is all about feelings.

Joy, sadness, disgust, fear, and of course anger. Having three daughters, one that is a teen and one that is a preteen, this movie hit home.

As they have gotten older they have felt all of these emotions, but on a much deeper level then my five year old. The way that the emotions are presented in regards to parenthood, and growing up, make you want to stand up and say “that is totally it” and “that makes so much sense”.

I’d even go so far as to say that Inside Out should be shown to every fifth grader at every school with the puberty talk… even though that is not part of the movie… but at the same time it almost is in a background way.

Lava

For about 7 minutes before Inside Out starts is a short film called Lave that I LOVED! I have had this song in my head since we saw it a few months ago… don’t be late for the start of the movie because you will most definitely want to see this!

Inspired by the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes, “LAVA” is a musical love story that takes place over millions of years.
