Yep, I’ve noticed them too! For a couple weeks I couldn’t figure out why I was receiving so many comments that had a link back to Facebook. Spam comments don’t really bug me that much… I know that they are just trying to build up their SEO. Can’t blame a person for trying right? But what bothered me about this new batch of comments was that the only links that they contained were to Facebook pages?

What? Why? Are they trying to build up Facebook’s site? No, that can’t be it… had to be something else and it was driving me crazy not knowing their goal.

Yesterday the mystery was solved!

As most of us know, Google updated their page ranks during the past couple of days. This has been something on my mind recently since I moved my site over to WordPress. I lost my previous Page Rank and was back to a 1. I have that little plugin on my address bar that tells me the PR of every site I’m on and let’s be honest here… I’m a bit obsessed!  Back to yesterday, I was on my Facebook page and I happen to look up and see that Facebook had a PR of 3. Huh? Facebook always has a 9. I was confused.

I decided to check via a PR checker site: 9

I went back to Facebook and went to different pages… they all had different PR’s!

Ah Ha! The spammers knew that Google now gives a PR to individual Facebook pages! Thank you Spammer’s for the heads up!

  1. I used Akismet as a plug in on WordPress that gets rid of 99.9% of the spam comments. Works great!

    • I use it too! Awesome plugin… but I still go through spam comments a couple times a day!

    • My website is still new. I wonder how the FB spammers found it. I don’t use Akismet, can Akismet prevent FB spams? By searchings spam prevention solution, I found “Bad Behavior” plugin that sounds interesting. I’ve just installed it, now wait and see how effective it can do.

      @Heather:
      You explanation solves the mystery I was curious about too.

  2. I had no idea about this. But I did hear that Google didn’t’ include Facebook in some recent changes (can’t blame them, they are trying to compete with them) so this makes sense for google to make this move.

    ABH (I love this, sounds so much better than “stopping by from…)

  3. Oh, I wanted to ask about one thing. I have considered moving to wordpress. So if I switch, can’t i just keep my normal url but have a different hosting site that directs to this url so there wouldn’t be a need to increase rank etc again? I haven’t read this anywhere, this is just how I supposed it worked bc, well, it made sense :)

    Forgot to give you my url before
