Fitness and Nutrition are very important to Ashley and I.  We both love CrossFit and are always looking for an edge whether it is in the way that we train, or our nutrition.  I heard about this company, DNAFit, that analyzes your DNA and then provides personalized information, and recommendations based on your genetic profile.  This idea was so interesting to me, that I reached out to them in order to work together and share it with you all.

DNAFit provided Ashley and I each their Fitness Diet Pro package so we can dive into their product and see how it could help us understand how we can improve our fitness and nutrition.

To get started, DNAFit sent each of us a packet that contained a DNA collection kit.  It contained easy to understand instructions as well as a q-tip type swab and vile.  We swabbed the q-tips in our mouths according to the directions and placed them in their individual vials that were then mailed back to DNAFit.  In a couple of weeks we were notified by email that the results were complete.  We each logged into their site and downloaded our reports in the form of pdf documents.  Since we are viewing the Fitness Diet Pro package, there is a pdf document for Fitness and a separate one that deals with Nutrition.  The Fitness report is 15 pages long, while the nutrition report is 25 pages in length.  While it may seem daunting to review all this information, it really wasn’t.  There are summaries included for each report which clearly goes through the main points.  There is also a great amount of detail if the science of it is interesting to you.

As I mentioned, each report has clear summaries of the results.  Here are the summaries of the Fitness report for me and Ashley:

There is a lot of information to sift through, but here are some immediate action steps I am going to take based on my DNA profile:

-The report noted that I have a genetic variation that results in slower free radical clearance from my body.  For this reason, it is recommended that I consume higher than average quantities of antioxidants.  This means that I am planning to consume more foods that are higher in antioxidants to compensate.  Foods such as cranberries, blueberries, blackberries, beans, artichokes, pecans, walnuts, and hazelnuts are all known to be great antioxidants.

-My genetic results indicate a raised requirement for Omega 3 fatty acids.  My plan here is to increase supplementation of Omega 3.  Now I take it every once in awhile, but now I realize the importance of taking this everyday in higher quantities.  Since I’m vegetarian, I take a seaweed based Omega 3 that I order online

-My genetic results indicate that I am sensitive to salt.  I will now pay attention to this and try to limit my sodium intake to 2200/mg day or less.

-The results indicated that I am very sensitive to refined carbs/sugar.  I have always felt that I am sensitive to this, but it is great to have the genetic proof that I should not be overdoing it on these foods.  I cut out all deserts about a year ago, but I really need to take it a step further and read the food labels more and not consume foods with added sugars.  Along these same lines, my genetic profile indicates that the best plan for weight management for me is low carbohydrate/lower carbohydrates.  I already felt this was the case as well as limiting carbohydrates has always helped me slim down whenever  I need to.

I have to say that I am very impressed with the information that was provided as a result of this genetic testing.  We have so many more tools available to us these days than the generations before us.  Genetic testing in the fitness and nutrition worlds is really the next step to improving health and performance.  I feel a sense of empowerment now that I can use this information to devise a concrete plan to take my fitness and overall health to the next level.
