We are venturing into deeper aspects of travel this year. From pushing our perceived comfort zone by vacationing at a dude ranch, to adding more sustainable aspects to our travels, we are just starting to scratch the surface of traveling in more meaningful ways.

One of our goals  this year was to be able to share more that goes into our travels too, beyond just the on the ground aspects. We are trying to bring you more of the prep, and behind the scene steps that we take to ensure that we always have a great visit no matter where we are traveling while featuring ways that we are always thinking about sustainability during our visits.

Sustainable travel is important to us because it benefits everyone involved. It helps the local areas you are visiting at the core of the community where your tourism dollars help those at all levels of the economy. It also benefits the environment. It really is a win-win and a great way to make your next vacation mean even more.

Here is the World Tourism Organization’s definition of Sustainable Travel:

“Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities”

Since we have started adding more sustainable travel aspects to our trips, we have learned that the common myths surrounding the aspect of sustainability are just that, myths. AIG Travel, a worldwide leader in travel insurance and assistance services, also found the same to be true in a recent poll they conducted. They found that people were receptive to the idea of sustainable travel, but felt there were barriers to responsible tourism with some myths that exist about the subject.

In this video we debunk 5 common sustainable travel myths.

I think these are a great starting point to help those that are interested in responsible travel learn more. I am so excited to keep the conversation going, and delve into this topic further with the help of AIG Travel (@TravelGuard). I will be hosting a special sustainable travel Twitter chat with AIG Travel on Tuesday, August 9th from 8-9pm CT using the hashtag #WhereNext?, and I would love to have you join us with a deeper conversation about sustainable travel and some great prizes!
